A strange incident occurred at the Thika Level V hospital on Tuesday after police detectives discovered that a patient they had taken for treatment was in possession of a stolen firearm. According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), residents in Kahawa Sukari raised an alarm after the patient was shot severally by unknown persons who later sped off in a Toyota Probox just near the hospital.

"Swinging into action, police rushed to the scene where they found the badly injured man whom they helped to hospital, just in time to have doctors manage his profuse bleeding," said DCI. After being stabilised, the doctors together with the officers tried to identify the patient but found no identification on him.

Police raised suspicions after the man expressed unwillingness to neither give his name nor comply with the questions being asked. "This prompted the officers to initiate a forensic ID process that provided his name, and later traced his place of residence at Gireki Plaza Hse no. 10 located within Kiganjo area of Makongeni," said DCI.

"A search therein saw the recovery of the Ceska pistol loaded with 15 rounds of ammunition which was hidden under the carpet alongside a roll of bhang."

Subsequent investigations later revealed that the firearm was robbed from a civilian firearm holder in Kahawa Sukari on January 28, when two armed men riding on an unmarked motorcycle accosted him at a construction site robbing him of his mobile phone and cash.

DCI says that on the same day, the two suspects went on to confront three citizens at Landless Section 2 and robbed their mobile phones and money at gunpoint."The ongoing investigations signal that the shot suspect may be familiar with his attackers, as they had allegedly engaged in an altercation over a previous engagement before the shots were fired," said DCI.

The patient will now remain under police watch as he recuperates awaiting arrest and arraignment. Meanwhile, a manhunt has been launched for his shooters.
