The Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, on Monday, July 1, 2024, disclosed that many drainages in the state are under threat as they are being destroyed by vandals who steal iron reinforcement and sell the items at give-away prices.

He disclosed this on his X handle after he visited a drainage system at the Ikosi Road, Ketu, which collapsed as a result of the activities of vandals who removed the iron reinforcement that provided support for the concrete base of the drainage.

According to the commissioner, the Office of Drainage Services in the ministry discovered that many of the drainages in the state have had the iron reinforcement that served as support for the concrete base removed by vandals.

He wrote: "A lot of drainage infrastructure in the state have recently come under attacks by vandals who remove the iron reinforcement and sell at give-away prices, prompting the ministry to read the riot act to vandals on the prowl in the state."

Speaking on the drainage that collapsed a week ago at Aladelola Street off Ikosi Road, he said officials of the State Public Works Bureau visited the scene on Monday, cordoned off the location in preparation for the immediate commencement of its repairs by the Office of Drainage Services.

He therefore urged vandals to desist from stealing iron reinforcement of concrete bases in order to make them to last longer.
