In response to those who criticised him for not covering his head during his recent Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca, Oba Abdulrosheed Adewale Akanbi, Oluwo of Iwo, has spoken out. He asserted that his encounter in Saudi Arabia, where he circumambulated the Kaaba without a headscarf, was a demonstration of his devotion to God.

He claimed he was trying to show his commitment and humility by joining the spiritual essence of Hajj through his deeds. Among the peculiar liturgies he outlined for Hajj was the practice of wearing nothing at all during some ceremonies, including headscarves, shoes and undergarments.

In a conversation with Punch, he explained that he went on the Hajj to complete a religious obligation. One of Islam's five pillars is the hajj. We don't wear any clothing, shoes, or undergarments when we go there. At the same time, there were a number of presidents there. God has placed an eternal crown on my head, even though I do not physically wear one. In deference to God, I travelled to Saudi Arabia to conduct Tawaf sans a headscarf. Allow individuals to face their superstitions independently. "My God approves of this."
