Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party in Nigeria, has reacted to the landslide victory of Labour Party in the UK parliamentary elections.

In a historic political revolution, the opposition Labour Party won the British election, ending 14 years of rule by the Conservative Party.

The party’s victory was confirmed on Friday morning when it secured the 326 seats necessary for a parliamentary majority.

Reacting, Obi, in a statement via his X account on Friday, congratulated the party and its leader, Keir Starmer, over the victory at the polls.

Pandemonium struck in Ughelli, Delta State, on Friday, when suspected armed robbers attacked a bank customer at the premises of a new-generation bank in the metropolis.

PUNCH Metro gathered that the gunmen numbering about five in a Toyota Venza, had trailed the unidentified customer to the bank premises, before shooting sporadically while attacking their target.

Witnesses said that the customer, had yet to enter the banking hall, when the gunmen struck and eventually made away with three ‘Ghana Must Go’ bags containing money.

The Federal Government yesterday defended the SAMOA Agreement, saying it was signed in the interest of Nigeria.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, who clarified a statement in Abuja, said: ”On June 28, 2024, Nigeria signed the Samoa Agreement at the Organisation of African, Caribbean, and Pacific States, OACPS, secretariat in Brussels, Belgium.

”The partnership agreement is between the EU and its member states on one hand, and the members of the OACPS on the other.

”Negotiations on the agreement started in 2018, on the sidelines of the 73rd United Nations General Assembly. It was signed in Apia, Samoa, on November 15, 2018, by all 27 EU member states and 47 of the 79 OACPS member states.

Rishi Sunak on Friday apologised to the public after his Conservatives were trounced by Labour in the United Kingdom general election, and said he would step down as party leader.

The 44-year-old former financier gambled on going to the country six months before he had to, hoping that better economic data would swing public support back towards the Tories.

But Thursday’s vote indicated that Britons wanted to send a clear message to the party by kicking them out of power after 14 years of economic hardships, Brexit upheaval and Tory infighting.
