Rivers Assembly Overrides Fubara, Passes LG Bill To Law

The Rivers state House of Assembly has passed the local government Amendment Bill into law without the assent of the state governor, Siminalayi Fubara.

The Assembly on Monday, April 22, defied the state High Court’s order directing the status quo on the issue of elongating the tenure of elected local government officials, which formed part of the amendment.

The House was said to have also screened and confirmed members of the chairman and other members of the Assembly Service Commission in the spirit of the new law.

Lagos schools Resume Today

Both public and private primary and secondary schools in Lagos have resumed for the 2023/2024 Third Term Academic Session, today, April 22, 2024.

The schools vacated for the 2023/2024 said Second Term Academic Session on March 28, 2024.

A private school owner who spoke with PUNCH Online confirmed the resumption.


IGP Wants NSCDC, FRSC Merged With Police

The Inspector General of Police, Mr Kayode Egbetokun, has advised the Federal Government to merge the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) with the police for effectiveness.

Egbetokun said this at the National Dialogue on State Policing, organised by the House of Representatives on Monday in Abuja with the theme “Pathways to Peace: Reimagining Policing in Nigeria”.

The I-G, represented by the Assistant Inspector General (DIG) of Police, Mr Ben Okoro, said that the NSCDC and the FRSC were a duplication of the police.


Tinubu Opens African Counter-Terrorism Summit

President Bola Tinubu has opened the African Counter-Terrorism Summit at the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) in Abuja.

Special adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale in a statement on Sunday informed a high-level summit, organised by Nigeria in collaboration with the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT), will take place from April 22 to 23.

The Nation reported that the objective of the summit is to enhance multilateral counter-terrorism cooperation and reshape the international community’s collective response to terrorism in Africa, emphasizing African-led and African-owned solutions.


Aiyedatiwa Appreciates Tinubu To Providing Enabling Environment

Gov. Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State on Monday appreciated President Bola Tinubu for allowing enabling environment for the peaceful conduct of the Saturday’s governorship primary in the state.

Aiyedatiwa stated this in his acceptance speech after he emerged as the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for the Nov. 16 governorship election in the state.

Usman Ododo, the Chairman of the Governorship Primary Election Committee for Ondo State and Governor of Kogi, had on Monday declared Aiyedatiwa as the winner of the Saturday’s primary.


49-Year-Old Woman Commits Suicide In Ogun

A 49-year-old woman, Victoria Idowu, has reportedly hanged herself on a ceiling fan in her residence in the Magboro area of Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State.

Her son was said to have discovered the lifeless body of his mother upon his return from a church service, prompting him to raise the alarm.
