In an exclusive interview with INDEPENDENT, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, leader of the Pan-Yoruba socio-cultural organization Afenifere, emphasized the pressing need for a new constitution in response to increasing demands from Nigerian workers for a higher minimum wage. Chief Adebanjo openly discussed several major issues the nation is currently facing.

Chief Adebanjo urged the Federal Government to reconsider its position on the demands for a higher minimum wage by Nigerian workers. He criticized the government's inability to sustain such demands, contrasting it with what he sees as excessive spending in other areas.

Afenifere's advocacy for restructuring and decentralization of power in Nigeria aligns with the current push for a new constitution. Chief Adebanjo emphasized that an updated constitution is essential for tackling systemic inequalities and inefficiencies in governance.

"It is not enough for the Federal Government to say that they cannot sustain the demands of the workers. But they can sustain the demands of the humongous salaries that the National Assembly members and their personal assistants are earning. They can support the humongous money needed to repair the Vice President’s house," he said.
