According to a report from the Sun, the reinstated Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi II, challenged the artificiality of Nigeria's geopolitical zones and ethnic divisions. He argued that these groupings do not accurately represent the country's rich diversity and longstanding cultural differences.

He emphasized the intricate histories of conflict and diversity within regions like the Niger Delta, which are frequently overlooked in favor of simplified ethnic and regional identities.

Sanusi called for a more honest and aware comprehension of Nigeria's diverse and sometimes contentious composition. He cautioned against creating arbitrary groupings that could worsen rather than resolve the nation's issues.

In Sanusi's words, he disclosed saying, "Initially, the regions in this country were North, East, and West. Then we added the Midwest. Now we have six geopolitical zones. Where did they come from historically? We can keep dividing this country into more regions, but are we being honest? Are these regions homogeneous? In the Niger Delta, when did the Itsekiri stop fighting the Ijaw?."

He added saying, "Jonathan was president of Nigeria. Does the man from Edo feel that his person was president because an Ijaw man was there. Since when did we become homogeneous?."
