Many transfers have already been done by English Premier League (EPL) clubs since the 2024 summer transfer window opened. However, only 4 of these moves involved fees in excess of €40m so far as per Transfermarkt. Who are the players involved?
Douglas Luiz
The most expensive EPL transfer so far involves the movement of Douglas Luiz Soares de Paulo. This Brazil international moved from Aston Villa to Juventus. It is worthtjy of note that the Italian outfit paid €51.50m for the midfielder. The reigning Olympics football gold medallist has played for Manchester City and Girona before joining the Villans. Now, he will be expecting to play in the UEFA Champions League for the first time in his career.
The second most expensive transfer within the period involves the movement of Ian Ethan Maatsen. His transfer from Chelsea to Aston Villa cost the Villans €44.50m. Meanwhile, the left-back played on loan for Borussia Dortmund last season and netted one goal in 7 Champions League appearances for the German heavyweights during that term. The Dutchman's move will afford him another opportunity to feature in the elite competition in 2024/25.
The next two players that make the list are both central midfielders. These are Archie Gray and Elliot Anderson. Gray, who is currently 18 years old, moved to Tottenham in a deal that cost the Londoners €41.25m. He is closely followed by Anderson who moved for a fee of €41.20m from Newcastle to Nottingham Forest.
It should be noted that the most expensive player among them was purchased away from the English top flight.
