Cholera: Fed Govt battles open defecation

Speaking about the new anti-open defecation drive yesterday, Vice President Kashim Shettima reiterated the commitment of the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to end open defecation by 2025.

According to a statement by Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Information, Office of the Vice President, Stanley Nkwocha, Shettima spoke when he inaugurated the Steering Committee for the “Clean Nigeria: Use the Toilet” Campaign, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

He said ending open defecation could be achieved by mobilising strategic stakeholders and leveraging technology as well as deploying innovative and sustainable solutions to boost the nation’s sanitation landscape.

Labour Party cruises to victory

Rishi Sunak is on his way out of 10 Downing Street as the Labour Party has crossed the 326-seat threshold for becoming the majority in the House of Commons.

BBC had projected that the final results would show Labour winning 410 seats, while the Conservatives having only 144.

Labour leader, Keir Starmer who is effectively the Prime Minister-elect, reacted to the victory while addressing supporters at a victory rally in London. He said: “A mandate like this comes with a great responsibility”.

Ribadu hands over 16 rescued victims to Zamfara govt

The National Security Adviser (NSA) yesterday handed over 16 rescued kidnap victims to officials of Zamfara State Government.

Ribadu handed over the rescued persons to the state officials led by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Abubakar Nakwada, at the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC) in Abuja.

The victims, comprising eight males and eight females, were abducted from Zurmi, Duran and Gusau in Zamfara State on April 22 before they were rescued on June 27 in Shinkafi and Tsafe Local Government Areas of the state by a team of security operatives of the NCTC.

Police, robbery suspects in gun duel in Lagos

For hours last night, police men and some robbery suspects engaged in shootout.

The incident occurred on Ladipo Road, Mushin, Lagos.

The ever-busy road became deserted as people scampered for safety.

Eyewitnesses said the exchange of fire started about 8pm and lasted till a few minutes before 10pm.

They alleged that the gunmen’s mission was to rob a bank.
