Mossad head said to travel to Doha to meet Qatari PM without negotiating team

opera.com 3 days ago

According to Time of Israel, Mossad's chief, David Barnea, embarked on a solo mission to Doha today, where he met with Qatar’s Prime Minister, Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani. Their discussions centered on a proposed truce and hostage exchange agreement with Hamas, according to a report from Kan public broadcaster, which cited high-ranking Israeli officials.

Interestingly, Barnea traveled without two key figures from Israel’s high-level negotiation team. Ronen Bar, the head of the Shin Bet security agency, and Maj. Gen. (res.) Nitzan Alon, who serves as the IDF’s point person in these negotiations, did not accompany him. Their absence highlights the significance of Barnea’s solo undertaking.

Officials have advised the public to temper their expectations about the outcome of these talks. While the meeting is a critical step, the complexities involved suggest that an immediate breakthrough may not be forthcoming. This cautious stance underscores the challenging nature of reaching a comprehensive agreement with Hamas.
