Lamido Sanusi, the Emir of Kano, has encouraged Nigerians to hold the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) responsible for electoral malpractices.

The Emir recently stressed in a speech that INEC bears responsibility for any anomalies since they are involved in the election process and winner declaration.

Lamido Sanusi contended that in cases involving electoral disputes, litigants have to go against INEC rather than candidates or political parties.

Using a hypothetical scenario in which Senator Bature wins an election but INEC proclaims Dan Buram the new governor, he made his point. The Emir feels that INEC should be held accountable in this situation rather than Dan Buram or his group.

The Emir's remarks emphasise how Nigeria's political process needs accountability and electoral reform.

Lamido Sanusi promotes a change in emphasis from individual candidates to the organisation in charge of guaranteeing free and fair elections by highlighting INEC's role.

According to The Sun, Lamido Sanusi said, “Let’s be honest enough to say let us allow the system to work. If you have an election today and Senator Bature wins the election and INEC declares Dan Buram governor, who should he be suing? Dan Buram and his party, or INEC? We should start suing INEC, because INEC is the one that declares. It’s not Dan Buram’s fault that INEC declared him or rigged on his behalf or whatever. Even if he went and paid, we should hold INEC responsible. It is their result. What do we have now? When you now go and sue Dan Buram, then INEC becomes his ally because they now have to help him defend.”
