Lagos State govt dislodges illegal street traders causing traffic gridlock at TBS

The Lagos State government on Saturday, July 6, 2024, dislodged those it described as illegal street traders displaying their goods at the perimeter fence of the Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS) in the Lagos Island area of the state.

The state government said the illegal street trading always causes traffic logjam and had also caused environmental nuisance in the area.

The Commissioner for Environmental and Water Resources in the state, Mr Tokunbo Wahab, who announced the development on his X handle on Saturday, said officials of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps, popularly known as KAI, swooped on the area on Saturday and dislodged the traders.

According to him, the Lagos Island Divisional Command of the agency embarked on what he described as "sting enforcement" at the perimeter fence of TBS, clearing the area of the traders and removing their various goods.

The Commissioner wrote: "Earlier today, the divisional command of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (KAI) embarked on sting enforcement at Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS) perimeter fence, clearing the area of illegal street trading causing gridlock and environmental nuisance in the area."

Many residents, especially in Lagos Island, including motorists and commuters, have always expressed concern over the activities of traders at the TBS that always caused traffic logjam at the area.

They also complained that these illegal activities made them to spend hours in traffic.
