The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State has announced its decision to abstain from the upcoming local government election scheduled for October 5th.

Tony Okocha, Chairman of the APC Caretaker Committee in the state, revealed the party's stance, citing significant irregularities in the election preparation process.

According to Daily Post, Okocha asserted that the APC was notably absent from a stakeholders’ meeting organized by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) on Monday, where crucial decisions regarding the election were made.

He clarified that no genuine APC member was present at the meeting, despite reports suggesting otherwise.

While confirming the party's decision not to boycott the election outright, Okocha emphasized their intent to pursue legal avenues to halt the election until the alleged issues surrounding the electoral process are addressed.

The local government chairmen's tenures expired on June 17, prompting Governor Siminalayi Fubara to appoint Caretaker Committee Chairmen to bridge the administrative gap.

The APC's refusal to participate underscores escalating tensions ahead of the election, with implications for the political landscape in Rivers State.
