Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State has announced a comprehensive military intervention to address the escalating violence by armed bandits in the Sankera axis, particularly Ukum Local Government Area.

The decision follows a recent attack on Ayati community, where bandits allegedly killed several residents, prompting protests that spiraled into widespread destruction of public and private properties.

In a live broadcast from Makurdi, Governor Alia expressed sympathy for victims and condemned the bandits' actions, describing their reprisal attacks as targeted at soft targets in retaliation for perceived betrayals.

He acknowledged initial peaceful protests were exploited by criminals to wreak havoc in Sankera.

The governor disclosed that security agencies had responded by neutralizing two bandits and recovering significant weaponry and vehicles.

He also commended the bravery of security personnel injured in the line of duty.

According to Vanguard, Alia emphasized the government's resolve to restore peace and bring perpetrators to justice, announcing plans for a commission of enquiry to investigate the root causes of the violence.

He urged residents to refrain from further violence and assured continued efforts to secure the state.
