Joaquin Caparros: Former Sevilla Coach Joins Race to Become Next Super Eagles Coach, Report

opera.com 3 days ago

The search for a new Super Eagles coach has taken an interesting turn with the emergence of Joaquin Caparros, a seasoned Spanish coach, as a contender for the position. Caparros, who has over 40 years of coaching experience, has expressed interest in leading the Nigerian team, according to a report by Sport Brief.

Caparros boasts an impressive coaching career, having managed several European teams, including Sevilla, Levante, Osasuna, and the Armenian national team. His notable achievements include setting Armenia's record for the longest unbeaten run during his two-year stint as the team's coach.

The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) is keen on appointing a foreign coach to replace Finidi George, who surprisingly left his position as Super Eagles coach due to disappointing results in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification matches against South Africa and the Republic of Benin.

Caparros' interest in the Super Eagles job is not a surprise, given his previous consideration for the position before Finidi's appointment in April. Other foreign coaches, including Italian manager Roberto Landi and Swiss coach Raoul Savoy, have also shown interest in managing the Nigerian team.

The NFF is expected to make a decision soon, and Caparros' wealth of experience and impressive coaching record make him a strong contender for the position. If appointed, Caparros will be tasked with turning around the Super Eagles' fortunes and leading the team to success in the upcoming World Cup qualification matches.
