At 68 years, Major General ( Rtd) Joseph Ole Nkaiserry was one of the most powerful members of former President Uhuru Kenyatta's Jubilee government.
As the Cabinet Secretary in-charge of the sensitive Interior ministry, the formed Kenya Army general had won the trust of Uhuru who had picked him in 2015 from the opposition to lead the security docket.
In the military where he had worked for some three decades, the former CS rose to the rank of a two-star general before hanging his boots in the run up to the 2002 general election where he made a huge plunge into the murky world of politics.
As a soldier, Major General ( Rtd) Nkaiserry once served as assistant chief of Defence Forces in-charge of logistics and personnel.
While vying on a Narc party ticket, he was elected as Kajiado Central MP. He was re-elected for a second straight term in 2007 on Raila Odinga's ODM party.
During the 2013, he was re-elected for a third straight term. At the time, he had become one of Raila's key political pillars in the Maasai community region.
But in a surprise move by Uhuru, he raided the opposition and picked the ODM legislator for the internal security minister position. And from there, the former Kenya Army General became one of the untouchables in the Jubilee government.
However, his rising political star was suddenly extinguished in 2017 when he collapsed and died after developing cardiac arrest.
It was a big blow to Uhuru and his government with the death of the CS coming just weeks to the general election. It was the end of an era for the former general who had become so powerful in government.
