According to a report from PUNCH, the Senate has provided clarification on its practice of summoning ministers and heads of various government agencies, asserting that such actions are crucial for ensuring transparency, accountability, and effective governance.

The Senate spokesperson, Yemi Adaramodu, responded to recent comments made by President Bola Tinubu, who urged lawmakers to exercise restraint in summoning officials before parliamentary committees.

President Tinubu, in his appeal to federal lawmakers, emphasized the importance of oversight in maintaining transparency and accountability but cautioned against excessive summoning of officials, citing potential disruptions to operations and hindrance to service delivery.

However, Adaramodu affirmed that summoning officials for questioning is a standard procedure aimed at addressing matters of public concern or policy implementation.

He clarified that summonses are issued based on substantial reasons, with specific policy or delivery matters outlined in advance to the summoned officials.

Contrary to President Tinubu's assertion, Adaramodu emphasized that summonses are not issued for internal affairs of ministries or agencies but rather to address issues relevant to the public interest.

Any grievances against officials are expected to be submitted in the form of public complaints or petitions, which are then deliberated upon openly in the chamber before being referred to the relevant committee for further investigation.

Highlighting the significance of oversight functions, Adaramodu cited examples of committees conducting on-site inspections of government projects despite security challenges.

He referenced recent oversight visits conducted by various committees to inspect road projects, petroleum facilities, and youth development initiatives across different regions of Nigeria.
