Champions League Record Holder Set to Join Super Eagles Coaching Staff

According to Soccernet.ng, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) may have decided to appoint former international Daniel Amokachi as one of the Super Eagles' assistant coaches.

This week, the Super Eagles are set to choose a new manager, and Emmanuel Amunike, a former Barcelona winger, is the front-runner.

Financial restrictions apparently led the NFF to abandon its original plans to name a foreign coach for the national team; instead, Amunike was given the Super Eagles coaching position.

In competing with the likes of Finidi George, Daniel Amokachi, Ndubuisi Egbo, Michael Nsien, and a number of other former internationals, the 1994 Africa Footballer of the Year emerged victorious and a perfect candidate for the post.

Owngoal sources indicate that Amunike will collaborate with fellow AFCON 1994 victor Amokachi to help the Super Eagles accomplish their goals.

During Jose Peseiro's nearly two-year tenure as head coach of Enyimba FC, Finidi served as the Portuguese manager's assistant.

Daniel Amokachi's outstanding resume

When Amokachi played his first Africa Cup of Nations in Algeria in 1990, he was just 17 years old, and Nigeria won a silver medal.

In 1992, Amokachi made history in the Champions League by becoming the first player to score in the league's new structure. His goal against CSKA Moscow in the opening group stage match of the competition gave Club Brugge a 1-0 victory.

Twice, he took home the esteemed Belgian Ebony Shoes Award. One in 1992 and another in 1994.

The former Ranchers Bees player and Amunike were teammates in the 1994 Super Eagles team that won the African championship in Tunisia, when Nigeria won the title for the second time.

In Nigeria's inaugural FIFA World Cup, held in the United States in 1994, Amokachi and Amunike were the only players to score two goals individually.

In the 1996 Olympic Games final, they both scored against Argentina, helping Nigeria win its first-ever gold medal in football.

Before an injury caused him to retire in 2006, Amokachi played for Everton and Beşiktaş. He then accepted a coaching position with Nasarawa United.

In addition, he has coached Finland's JS Hercules, Ifeanyi Ubah, and Enyimba FC.

Amokachi previously assisted Stephen Keshi and Shuaibu Amodu during his two stints as the Super Eagles' assistant coach.

His greatest moment as a coach came when he helped Keshi lead Nigeria to their third consecutive continental championship at the 2013 AFCON.
