The qualification for contesting for party primaries should be your financial standing within the party in terms of dues payment, and not the charge for a form- Chibuzo Okereke
Public analyst Chibuzo Okereke, speaking on ARISE TV, stated the urgent need for political parties in Nigeria to undergo significant reform. He highlighted the disarticulation within political parties, particularly in terms of leadership arrangements, as a key issue that needs to be addressed.
Okereke pointed out the prevalence of individuals within political parties who prioritize their personal interests over the party's collective objectives. This, he argued, creates challenges in governance, as individuals may struggle to balance the interests of various factions within the party once they assume office.
Regarding election funding, Okereke criticized the practice of charging exorbitant fees for nomination forms, which he argued undermines the principles of democracy and popular participation.
He proposed that qualification for contesting party primaries should be based on financial standing within the party, measured by dues payment, rather than the cost of nomination forms.
In his words: “The qualification for contesting for party primaries should be your financial standing within the party in terms of dues payment, and not the charge for a form so I think that the reform we are doing now should target making sure that there is zero payment for forms, because this is not party chairmanship you are talking about National election.”
