According to Vanguard, Professor Umar Labdo, a prominent Kano indigene and scholar of Islamic Political Thought at Yusuf Maitama Sule University, sheds light on the emirship tussle in Kano, offering a historical context and a potential resolution for the conflict.

He said, "The present crisis is the handiwork of politicians. Sanusi was appointed Emir in 2014 during the administration of Goodluck Jonathan by then-Kano State governor, Rabiu Kwakwanso. Kwakwanso appointed Sanusi just to spite Jonathan, who had a misunderstanding with Sanusi and subsequently sacked him as Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). Kwakwanso’s appointment of Sanusi as Emir of Kano was seen as a political move against the President.

"The involvement of politics didn’t stop there. The succeeding governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, deposed Sanusi and appointed Aminu Ado Bayero as the new Emir. This, too, was politically motivated. More recently, Governor Kabiru Yusuf reinstated Sanusi, further entangling the emirship in political maneuvering."

"Politics is very dirty. It is dividing a prominent family and, if care is not taken, it can bring conflict to Kano. This would be detrimental to the development of not only Kano but also northern Nigeria and the entire country, given Kano’s position as a cultural melting pot. Kano doesn’t deserve this type of controversy."
