Sanusi Lamido Sanusi II, the reinstated Emir of Kano, has broken his silence on his decision not to challenge his removal from the prestigious position. In a candid conversation with The Sun, Sanusi explained his choice, citing the difficulties he would face under the leadership of a governor who had openly expressed his dislike for him.

Sanusi, a former Central Bank Governor of Nigeria and an influential figure in Nigerian politics and religion, was removed from his position as Emir of Kano in 2020. The decision sparked widespread controversy and debate across the country. However, Sanusi has chosen to move forward, prioritizing his personal well-being and professional interests outside the political arena.

“You’re under a governor. The law gives him the power to be on top of you. He has made it clear he does not like me,” Sanusi stated. “If I come, he would just make my life miserable. It was going to be one story after the other. One fake story, one social media insult after another, and in my position, I won’t be able to respond.”

Sanusi emphasized that the ongoing animosity from the governor would have led to a continuous battle, impacting his ability to perform his duties effectively and maintain his dignity. By stepping away, he has found a more fulfilling and peaceful life in Lagos.

“In Lagos, I am happier,” he continued. “I am with my friends, publishing my book, doing my Ph.D., contributing to United Nations projects, and engaging in my Tijaniya religious work. This is a far better situation than sitting in Kano, constantly at odds with the government.”
