The Nation News report that, Yobe State Government has taken a significant step towards addressing the challenges faced by Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and their host communities. Governor Mai Mala Buni launched a policy that allocates 5% of the state's budget to tackle the complex issues posed by Boko Haram insurgency and natural disasters. The policy prioritizes the protection of IDPs' rights and dignity, offering a pathway to regain stability and rebuild their lives.

The policy was developed through extensive consultations with various stakeholders, including UN agencies, the World Bank, the Federal Government, local communities, non-governmental organisations, civil society organisations, traditional rulers, and the displaced persons themselves. Governor Buni emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability in implementing the policy, acknowledging that its success depends on the collective efforts of all sectors of society.

Development partners, including the World Bank and the North East Ambassador, commended Yobe for its inclusive approach and commitment to voluntary and informed relocation of IDPs. The policy aims to protect, assist, and reintegrate IDPs in compliance with national and international standards, aligning with the principles of humanity, neutrality, and independence.

The policy framework examines displacement stages from pre-emergency to recovery, emphasizing Yobe State's commitment to protecting citizens from displacement and providing assistance during rehabilitation, return, reintegration, and relocation. The Secretary to the State Government, Baba Mallam Wali, reiterated the state's commitment to allocating 5% of its budget to IDPs, separate from statutory budgetary provisions for infrastructure development and other infrastructure facilities.

This significant investment in the IDPs' welfare demonstrates Yobe State's determination to address the humanitarian crisis and promote sustainable development and peace in the region.
