According to reports by The PUNCH, loyalists and political allies of former Imo State governor, Emeka Ihedioha, have declared the demise of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state.

The declaration came during a press conference held in Owerri, the state capital, on Friday.

The group, comprising members of Ihedioha's 'Rebuild Imo' political organization, alongside his associates, announced their departure from the PDP, citing irreconcilable differences and a departure from the party's founding principles as reasons for their decision.

Ihedioha's resignation from the PDP in April served as the catalyst for a wave of resignations among party stalwarts and supporters in Imo State.

Stanley Ekezie, a former ex-officio member of the South-East PDP, spoke on behalf of the disenchanted group, expressing unwavering confidence in Ihedioha's leadership qualities.

Ekezie emphasized the need to collaborate with like-minded individuals and organizations to promote democracy and good governance.

He pointed out that Ihedioha's resignation highlighted the failure of the PDP to provide effective opposition to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and its inability to implement internal reforms.

The group accused the PDP National Working Committee (NWC) of disregarding due process and contravening the party's constitution in its handling of affairs in Imo State, ultimately leading to the party's downfall in the region.

However, the PDP remains unfazed by the exodus, with the spokesperson to the National Secretary dismissing the resignations as inconsequential.

According to him, the party continues to function effectively in Imo State, with all organs operating at their full capacity.
