The Kenyan government has issued a number of new rules aimed at all Kenya Power consumers in various local and regional locations.

The newly enacted Energy (energy Market, Bulk Supply, and Open Access) Regulations, 2024, published by the Ministry of Energy Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir, prevent all Kenya Power customers from moving to other energy distribution companies.

The Kenyan government has stated that all Kenya Power customers who live inside Kenya's large borders will continue to be clients of the state agency, notwithstanding the compulsory admission of other power distribution firms into the expansive energy sector.

The Kenyan government has announced that a strategic prohibition will go into force immediately, with the sole objective of shielding the utility firm from potential customer defection to other power distribution enterprises likely to enter the wider electrical market.

In its recently established regulations, the Kenyan government specifies that only Kenyans who are not members of the larger Kenya Power fraternity would be granted solemn authority to form partnerships with other power distribution firms.

What are your thoughts on the government's strategic plan to keep Kenya Power consumers from moving to another power distribution company? Please share your views, feelings, and ideas with us in the comments.
