According to Punch, A Lagos couple, Ezimora Okechukwu and his wife, Ezimora Obioma, have been sentenced to 11 years in prison for assaulting and indecently handling their 15-year-old housemaid. Okechukwu was sentenced to seven years for indecent handling and three years for assault, to run concurrently, while Obioma was sentenced to one year of community service for concealing the crime.
The incident occurred on July 17, 2022, in the couple's home in the Abule-Osun area of Lagos. The victim reported the assault to Obioma, who failed to report it to the authorities. The couple pleaded guilty to the charges, which were reduced from a more serious offense to indecent handling and assault after a plea bargain.
The judge, Justice Ramon Oshodi, described the act as "heinous" and condemned the couple's abuse of power and moral failure. The prosecution counsel noted that the couple showed remorse and had no previous convictions, which influenced the reduced sentence.
