The Lagos State Police Command reported that on Friday, its officers killed nine members of a suspected kidnapping gang during an operation.

According to police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin, the operation stemmed from intelligence received two weeks prior. The kidnappers, believed to be responsible for abductions in Isolo, Okota, Ejigbo, and Ladipo areas, were tracked for eight months.

Authorities planned an ambush in the Ladipo area. While the suspects reportedly opened fire, police claim they possessed superior firepower. "Nine of them were neutralized while two escaped with gunshot wounds," Hundeyin said, using a term that can signify being killed or incapacitated.

An investigation is underway to apprehend the remaining suspects. Police also recovered weapons and ammunition from the scene, including AK-47 rifles, SUVs, and communication devices.

This incident highlights the ongoing challenges with kidnapping in Lagos. While the police action offers some assurance, it also raises questions about the use of lethal force.
