Immediate-past deputy governor of Edo State, Philip , on Sunday, said supporting the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the State’s governorship poll slated for September 21, Senator Monday Okpebholo, falls within his inalienable rights just as Governor Godwin Obaseki is also supporting Asue Ighodalo, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Shaibu spoke to journalists on the sidelines of the Father’s Day celebration at the St. Paul Catholic Church in Benin City, the state capital on Sunday.

He said Ighodalo was a product of godfatherism, a lexicon he said has been eradicated from the political history of the state, which he said former governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, propagated and which he joined the incumbent governor to stop in the 2020 election.

He, however, said that he has also learnt new political strategies from Governor Obaseki.

According to him, “I am a very good learner and learning is what is most important in our lives, we must continue to learn till we die, the governor of Edo State, Mr Godwin Obaseki, says everybody has the right to support whoever he wants to support but he also forgot that he doesn’t have the right to stop anybody from supporting whoever he wants to support. So, it is my right to also decide who I want to support.

“I will support a home boy, I came in to contest to be governor of Edo State because I needed governance to return to a home boy, somebody that understands our plight, somebody that understands what the people are feeling, even the United Nations talks about needs assessment, we don’t want an outsider, we have experimented with an outsider and it is not working, so this time, we want a homeboy, I came into the contest as a home boy but today, we have only two home boys in the major political parties; one is in the Labour Party (LP) and one is in the All Progressives Congress (APC), and I chose to follow the home boy in the APC, the man they are parading in the PDP is an outsider and we have also agreed that no more godfatherism in Edo and the man PDP is parading is the godson of Obaseki and there is no way a godson can be governor of Edo State again.”

“I also call upon the Muslim faithful to use this period to offer prayers for our beloved country, Nigeria for peace, stability, and prosperity.”

Describing Eid-el-Kabir as the festival of sacrifice in commemoration of the unwavering faith and obedience of Prophet Ibrahim to Allah, the minister said it was time to reflect on the virtues of sacrifice, selflessness, and devotion.

He said the occasion also teaches us the importance of caring for one another and sharing God’s blessings, especially with less fortunate individuals and households.

Former President Muhammadu Buhari has stressed the importance of self-reliance in food production.

Speaking after attending Eid prayers with the Emir of Daura, Katsina State Dr Faruk Umar Faruk, Buhari lauded the efforts of Nigerians who have turned to farming to mitigate rising food prices and ensure national food security.

This was contained in a statement by his media aide, Garba Shehu.

He appealed to citizens to continue striving for self-reliance by growing and consuming locally produced food.

He said, “I am wishing everyone a Happy Sallah. May this special festival bring joy, prosperity, and wonderful health to everyone. This is not the time to relent when we see prices going up. Let us buy what is produced in the country.”

The former president highlighted the foundational work of previous administrations in creating a prosperous and stable country, urging the youth to engage actively in nation-building and to draw inspiration from the country’s founding fathers and regional leaders.

The Chief Executive of RwandAir, Yvonne Makolo, has said Qatar Airways is expected to finalise its deal of becoming the biggest shareholder of the Rwanda flag carrier by July.

Makolo said this while speaking with the Financial Times on Saturday.

“It’s been going on for a while, we have been discussing it for almost five years. So, now, we’re really at the tail-end of it,” Makolo said.

He added that for the past five years, Qatar and Rwanda have been working on a deal which would give the Gulf nation’s airline a 49 per cent stake in RwandAir for an undisclosed sum.

Qatar Airways declined to comment while RwandAir did not immediately respond to a request for further comment on the development.

Earlier this year, Qatar Airways Chief Executive Officer, Badr Mohammed Al Meer said that Qatar Airways would soon announce an investment in an airline in southern Africa.

Qatar Airways in 2019 took a 60 per cent stake in a new $1.3 bn international airport being built in Rwanda and has codeshare agreements with several airlines in Africa including RwandAir.
