Rivers: We have a disaster on our hands. We have an emergency - Rivers Leader
According to the report from SYMFONI TV, Chiefs and youth leaders from Buguma community have come forward with claims that a devastating oil spill in the region was caused by a combination of factors, including decades of neglected equipment maintenance and failure. The leaders further revealed that the multinational company responsible for the oil well is working to repair a damaged spot at the wellhead.
According to local representatives, the situation has escalated into a disaster that urgently requires intervention. One of the community leaders stated, "And then very, very importantly, we have a disaster on our hands. You've gone around, ladies and gentlemen of the press, you've seen, we have an emergency on our hands."
The spokesperson emphasized the need for swift government action, calling on local, state, and federal authorities to provide immediate relief. "We call on the government, the local government, the state government, the federal government, through the various emergency relief agencies, SEMA and all that, to get immediate relief materials to the various communities, because, I mean, as you've seen, most of them, their source of livelihood is gone," they added.
The spill has severely impacted the local communities, with many residents losing their primary sources of income, including fishing and farming. The call for urgent government support underscores the gravity of the crisis and the pressing need for a coordinated response.
