The Public Relations Officer of the Delta State Police Command, Bright Edafe, on Sunday, June 30, 2024, disclosed that parents who try cover up defilement of underage children could be charged to court for aiding and abetting.

Edafe disclosed this on his X handle while writing on the menace of child defilement which he said offender could face a life imprisonment.

There have been reports of parents who are said to have done everything possible to cover up defilement of their children because they want to avoid the shame and stigma attached whenever such cases are reported, especially in the media.

Some have even gone to the extent of demanding for compensation in order to "bury the case."

However, Edafe disclosed that parents who try to cover up defilement of their children could be taken to court and charged for aiding and abetting.

According to him, an intercourse with a person under the age of 13 years is defilement and the punishment, if found guilty, is life imprisonment, adding that even consent from the child is immaterial in the case of defilement.

He wrote: "A sexual intercourse with either a boy or a girl under the age of 13 years is defilement and the punishment, if found guilty, is life imprisonment.

"In this case, consent is immaterial and such offences can't be compounded. So going to court and swearing to an affidavit won't work.

"In fact, any parent who tries to cover defilement could be charged to court for aiding and abetting."

He therefore urged parents to desist from covering up matters relating to defilement.
