Local Refineries and Marketers Seek Quality Control, Pricing Solutions in Petroleum Meeting

opera.com 4 days ago

The Nigerian government denied allegations of importing substandard fuel following a meeting in Abuja with oil marketers and local refiners. Discussions centered on pricing, competition, and the importation of products already available domestically. While local refineries contribute to supply, marketers continue to source from various sources.

The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority refuted claims of allowing substandard fuel imports, clarifying that the last high-sulfur imports were in February and are now regulated. Devakumar Edwin of Dangote accused the agency of issuing licenses for banned Russian diesel, highlighting compliance challenges despite local production efforts.

There are several issues that came with that, such as pricing issues, competition, quality, etc. Some of these issues will be ongoing, but all it requires will be continuous engagements and consultations.

The authority reaffirmed adherence to ECOWAS standards, noting ongoing efforts by local refineries to comply. It emphasized a deregulated market allowing fair competition between imported and local fuels, pledging to ensure quality and stability. The meeting concluded with agreements to address pricing and quality control in Nigeria's petroleum sector.
