Former Governor of Imo State, Emeka Ihedioha, has disclosed that before he submitted a letter to the Peoples Democratic Party confirming his decision to leave the party, he had a discussion with the presidential candidate of the party for the 2023 presidential election, Atiku Abubakar, and he told him not to leave the party yet.

Emeka Ihedioha made this disclosure during an interview with a journalist on Arise Television. During the interview, Emeka Ihedioha said, "I had a discussion with him (Atiku Abubakar) before I put in my letter and he felt that I should hold on, but it was important that I left when I did. So, I would not say that he supported my move to leave the party but he said I should hold on so that we can talk. I was privileged to be at the national caucus meeting and I made my speech to the caucus and there was no point to continue deceiving myself."
