Ajax Could Offload Chuba Akpom to Make Space for Ex-Manchester United Striker

Amsterdam-based club Ajax FC is considering selling Nigerian forward Chuba Akpom to make room for the signing of former Manchester United star Wout Weghorst, according to reports from Soccernet.

Akpom, who joined Ajax last summer for a fee of €12.3 million, had a disappointing campaign with the Dutch champions, scoring just 11 goals in 25 appearances. Despite being handed the iconic number 10 shirt, the 28-year-old struggled to adapt to the team's playing style, leading to speculation about his future at the club.

According to Ajaxshowtime, the club is keen on signing Weghorst, who is currently playing for Hoffenheim, but needs to offload some players to make space in their frontline. Akpom, who has been linked to Premier League clubs and Lens, is seen as a prime candidate for sale, with Ajax valuing him at €12 million.

The former Arsenal player has switched his allegiance to Nigeria but is yet to receive a call-up to the Super Eagles squad. If sold, Akpom would leave Ajax after just one season, with the club opting to cash in on him rather than give him another chance to prove himself.

The potential sale of Akpom would be a significant departure from Ajax's usual policy of developing young players, but the club's desire to sign Weghorst, who has proven his quality in the Bundesliga, may force their hand. As the summer transfer window heats up, fans of the Dutch champions will be watching with keen interest to see if Akpom will be shipped out to make way for the former Manchester United striker.
