Bode George, a former military governor of Ondo State, has spoken about the distribution of local governments in Nigeria.

In a report recently shared by The Sun, George stated that Lagos and Kano states were both established in 1967. He said Jigawa State was later created from the old Kano and the combined total of LGAs for Kano and Jigawa is now 71, whereas Lagos remains with only 20. He said despite the significant contribution of Lagos to national development, Lagos has not seen an increase in its local government areas over the past 57 years, while Kano and Jigawa have gained more LGAs

In George's words: "Lagos and Kano states were created in 1967. Jigawa was later carved out of Kano. Today, Lagos has 20 councils, Kano 44 and Jigawa 27. So, in essence, after 57 years, the old Lagos still has 20 councils while the old Kano (now Kano and Jigawa) has 71"
