Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State, who serves as the Chairman of the Southern Governors’ Forum (SGF), has announced heightened security efforts across the Southern region to counter the reported infiltration of Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) elements. He revealed that Southern governors have established a platform for intelligence sharing and operational coordination to address the rising security challenges.

According to Vanguard governor Abiodun emphasized that the safety of the region’s residents is a priority, especially in light of reports that terrorists fleeing military operations in the North-West have been relocating to the South. This follows a recent statement by Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, who raised concerns over bandits seeking refuge in Oyo after escaping from military onslaughts in their previous hideouts. Governor Makinde reassured citizens that his administration is working tirelessly to eliminate the threat and maintain peace in the state.

Through his Special Adviser on Media and Strategy, Mr. Kayode Akinmade, Governor Abiodun outlined measures taken to enhance regional security. These include supporting both state and federal security agencies with operational resources, strengthening inter-agency collaboration, and fostering a unified approach to intelligence gathering. He stated that security remains a shared responsibility of federal and state governments, and Southern governors are committed to ensuring the safety of lives and properties within their jurisdictions.

In recent weeks, the Department of State Services (DSS) has confirmed the arrest of several suspected terrorists in the South-West, thanks to intelligence-led operations. A DSS source disclosed that proactive measures had been implemented before the arrival of the suspects and urged the public to remain vigilant while carrying on with their daily activities.

Chief Adetunji Adeleye, chairman of the South-West Amotekun Commanders, assured residents that the corps is prepared to confront any threats. He revealed that Amotekun, in collaboration with state governments, is implementing strategies to counter the infiltration of terrorists into the region.

The Yoruba Council of Elders (YCE) has also expressed concerns about the situation, urging South-West governors to take decisive action to prevent further security breaches. The group called on both federal and state governments to work together to safeguard lives and properties, emphasizing the importance of proactive measures in protecting the region.

Governor Abiodun reiterated his administration’s commitment to mobilizing resources, supporting security agencies, and maintaining peace across the South. Southern governors continue to coordinate efforts to ensure that the region remains secure and conducive for economic development. Residents have been encouraged to cooperate with authorities and trust in the ongoing measures to address these security challenges.
