During a recent appearance on Arise TV, Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, addressed the worsening economic situation in Nigeria. Obi stated that the current economic downturn during President Bola Tinubu’s first year in office is a direct continuation of the policies and direction set by former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Obi highlighted that President Tinubu, during his campaign, explicitly promised to continue the legacy of his predecessor. This promise, according to Obi, has been fulfilled, as the country’s economic conditions have deteriorated further since Tinubu took office. He pointed out that the economic challenges, which were already significant under Buhari’s administration, have now intensified.

In his remarks, Obi expressed concern over various aspects of the current administration’s performance. He noted a marked decline in adherence to the rule of law and a rise in nepotism, suggesting these issues have exacerbated the nation’s economic woes. The situation, according to him, reflects a continuation of previous governmental practices rather than any new strategic direction or improvement.

Obi's comments come amid widespread public dissatisfaction with the state of the economy, as citizens face increasing hardship. His critique emphasizes the need for a significant shift in governance to address the underlying problems and steer the country towards recovery and growth.

He said: Everything has headed south, Adherence to the rule of law has worsened. Nepotism is at the highest.
