Health Experts Warn Pregnant Women Against Lying on Their Backs for Long Periods
Medical professionals have issued a caution to pregnant women, emphasizing the dangers of lying on their backs for extended periods. Experts explain that such a position can lead to discomfort and even health risks due to the pressure exerted by the womb on a vital vein, the inferior vena cava.
“When a pregnant woman lies on her back for a long time, even for a few minutes, she may start sweating and feeling dizzy,” a health expert explained. “This happens because the blood supply to the brain is reduced. The growing womb presses on the major vein, collapsing it and obstructing blood flow back to the heart and brain.”
This condition, known as supine hypotensive syndrome, typically occurs in the second and third trimesters when the uterus has grown significantly in size. The resulting decrease in blood circulation can lead to symptoms such as lightheadedness, nausea, and shortness of breath.
To prevent these issues, healthcare providers recommend that pregnant women sleep or rest on their sides, particularly the left side. This position not only alleviates pressure on the inferior vena cava but also optimizes blood flow to the baby and other vital organs.
Mothers-to-be are also advised to consult their healthcare providers for guidance on safe sleeping and resting positions tailored to their unique needs. By raising awareness of this issue, experts hope to help women have safer and more comfortable pregnancies.
