France secured their fifth semi-final appearance at the UEFA European Championships after a thrilling penalty shootout victory over Portugal in Hamburg, according to a report by Flashscore.

Portugal’s goalkeeper, Diogo Costa, who had been the hero in their previous shootout against Slovenia, was called into action early on, making a routine save from Théo Hernández's long-range effort in the 20th minute. Despite Portugal having more possession in the first half, they struggled to convert it into clear chances. Their best opportunity came in the 43rd minute when Cristiano Ronaldo stepped aside for Bruno Fernandes to take a free-kick, which ultimately missed the target.

The second half saw a more dynamic French side, with Kylian Mbappe coming alive. He combined well with N'Golo Kanté but saw his curling shot comfortably saved by Costa. Portugal responded with two golden chances around the hour mark, first through Fernandes, whose effort was parried by Mike Maignan, and then Vitinha, who shot straight at the French keeper after being set up by Rafael Leão.

France had their opportunities as well. Randal Kolo Muani was denied by a brilliant block from Rúben Dias, and Eduardo Camavinga missed a chance to score, dragging his shot wide. The deadlock persisted, sending the match into extra time.

In the additional period, Ronaldo had a chance to redeem his earlier miss but blazed over from close range following Francisco Conceição’s setup. Surprisingly, Mbappe was substituted for Bradley Barcola midway through extra time. Portugal nearly clinched victory in the final moments, with Nuno Mendes forcing a crucial save from Maignan.

The match proceeded to a penalty shootout, France’s first since their loss in the 2022 World Cup final. João Félix's miss for Portugal proved decisive as France converted all their spot-kicks, securing a 5-4 shootout win and setting up an exciting semi-final clash with Spain.
