Dozens Protest In Kenya With Riot Police Out In Force

Dozens of Kenyans took to the streets Tuesday under a heavy police presence, with many shops shuttered as youth activists called for fresh protests after anti-tax hike demonstrations last month descended into deadly violence.

Activists have stepped up their campaign against President William Ruto despite his announcement last week that he would not sign into law a controversial finance bill that triggered what he has branded “treasonous” protests.

The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) said on Monday that 39 people had been killed and 361 injured during two weeks of demonstrations and condemned the use of force against protesters as “excessive and disproportionate”.

On Tuesday morning, the capital Nairobi’s central business district — the focus of previous rallies — was quiet, with police patrolling and few people on the streets.

Former Senate President Adolphus Wabara has reiterated his claim of turning down a N250 million bribe offered to support the controversial third-term agenda during Former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration.

When questioned about the veracity of this claim in an excerpt of a YouTube interview series, Untold Stories with Adesuwa, released on Monday, Wabara firmly stated, “That’s very correct.”

He maintained his stance even when pressed further by the interviewer.

Wabara provided context to the political climate of that time, saying, “Then when they were saying they were distributing N50 million per Senator, I didn’t believe it.”

I never lobbied NASS to extend my tenure – IGP Egbetokun

Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun has debunked reports alleging that he has been lobbying the National Assembly to tamper with the Nigeria Police Act 2020 to elongate his tenure, and year of service of personnel in the force.

Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi disclosed the IGP’s denial in a statement saying, “It is vital to clarify unequivocally that the bill was originally introduced during the 8th Assembly but did not progress beyond the initial stages before the Assembly’s dissolution.

“It is standard legislative practice to review and update laws to align with current national realities.”

The proposed amendment seeks to extend the years of service for police officers from 35 to 40 years, and the age limit from 60 to 65 years.

Adejobi said, “The Nigeria Police Force is deeply perturbed by the dissemination of false information across various media platforms, notably the distorted publication by online media, regarding the proposed amendment to the Nigeria Police Act 2020.
