The National Executive Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party on Thursday asked President Bola Tinubu to immediately rejig his economic team in order to salvage the country’s economy.

“NEC demands that President Tinubu should immediately rejig his economic team to bring in persons of proven integrity and competence without bias and vested interest to assist in repositioning the economy,” the PDP said in a communique issued at the end of the 98th NEC meeting in Abuja.

“NEC further demands that the Federal Government should review all policies and programmes which are stifling the economy with suffocating effect on the lives of citizens; including the increase in the price of fuel without cushioning measures, hike in electricity tariff, increased taxation and implementation of adverse fiscal policies.

“NEC expresses concern over the ill-implemented policies of the insensitive APC administration, leading to worsening insecurity, harrowing economic hardship, soaring unemployment rate, high cost of food and other necessities of life with pervading misery and despondency across the country,” the communique signed by the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, added.

President Bola Tinubu, has approved an extensive census of schools in Nigeria from primary to tertiary level, their conditions and live-in facilities, proximity to one another, and educational infrastructure among other data points.

The stocktake would also include ascertaining the number of all teachers in Nigeria, their qualifications, training support received, and all pupils and students in primary, secondary, and tertiary institutions, gender, and exam grades, among others.

Tinubu premised Thursday’s system-wide policies on “a paucity of coordinated, verifiable, and authentic data on all aspects of the education sector in Nigeria, which is critical for planning.”

Therefore, the move is meant to “comprehensively overhaul the education sector to improve learning and skill development, increase enrolment, and ensure the academic security of the nation’s children,” said the Presidency in a statement signed by Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale.
