Insecurity: IDPs groan amid worsening humanitarian crisis in Niger

opera.com 4 days ago

The humanitarian crisis in Niger State has deepened, with thousands of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) enduring harsh living conditions. DAILY POST reports that IDPs in camps across Shiroro, Munya, and Rafi local government areas are in dire straits.

Primarily women and children, these IDPs fled their homes due to violent bandit and Boko Haram attacks. They face inadequate housing, poor sanitation, and limited access to essentials like food, water, and healthcare. Malnutrition is widespread, particularly among children, due to insufficient food supplies.

During visits to camps in Rafi and Shiroro, IDPs expressed their despair over government neglect and the lack of livelihood opportunities. They called for relocation to safer areas and better support.

Shiroro LG IDP Desk Officer, Yusuf Bala Kuta, highlighted severe food shortages and poor living conditions in the camps, which house over 5,000 IDPs. He urged the government and aid agencies to provide more assistance.

In response, the State Government and the Nigerian Red Cross have provided some relief, but much more is needed to alleviate the suffering of these displaced individuals.
