Two Dead, Four Injured as Speeding Bus Rams into Truck on Sagamu-Benin Road

Tragedy struck on the Sagamu-Benin Expressway in the early hours of Monday when a speeding passenger bus collided with a truck, leaving two people dead and four others injured, as reported by The PUNCH.

According to the spokesperson for the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), Babatunde Akinbiyi, the accident occurred around 6:30 am at the Area Command hill, inbound Ijebu Ode.

The vehicles involved were an unregistered Howo truck and a Toyota Hiace bus with registration number BEN 823 ZW, Akinbiyi said.

He disclosed that the accident was caused by excessive speed on the part of the bus driver, leading to a loss of control and the eventual collision with the truck.

"There is a road traffic accident at Area Command hill, Inbound Ijebu Ode, on Sagamu-Benin Expressway at about 0630hrs on 01/07/2024. Two vehicles were involved including a Howo truck with no registration number and a Toyota Hiace bus with registration number BEN 823 ZW," Akinbiyi stated.

"According to eyewitnesses, the accident was caused by excessive speed on the part of the bus driver leading to loss of control thereby crashing into the truck."

Twenty persons were involved in the accident, comprising 15 males and 5 females, the TRACE spokesperson revealed.

While 14 of the passengers escaped unhurt, four sustained varying degrees of injuries and were rushed to the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH) for treatment.

Unfortunately, two victims lost their lives in the tragic incident. Akinbiyi said the remains of the deceased were deposited at the OOUTH morgue.
