Bill To Repeal NIMC Act Passes Second Reading In Senate

A bill that has passed its second reading in the Senate aims to revoke the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) Act of 2007.

According to a report by Channels Television, this proposed law intends to establish a National Identity Database managed by the NIMC, responsible for registering individuals and issuing identity credentials.

Senator Barau Jibrin, the Deputy Senate President, introduced the bill on June 5, and it was further deliberated on Tuesday.

The primary objective of this legislation is to improve the efficiency and inclusivity of the Identity Management System by implementing comprehensive measures in line with international standards.

During discussions, it was emphasized that the bill is crucial for the socio-economic and political progress of the nation, as well as for national security and effective identity management.

The bill aims to simplify the sharing of personal data, implement strong data protection protocols to safeguard individuals' privacy and confidentiality, and build greater citizen trust in how their data is managed and utilized.
