21 local government areas in Nigeria submerged in flood [Full list]

The Federal Government has revealed that no fewer than 21 local government areas in 10 states and the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, have been submerged by flood as a result of torrential rainfall in the past few days.

The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Engr Joseph Utserv, who disclosed this, along the Minister of State for Water Resource and Sanitation, Bello Goronyo, and the Director General, Nigeria Hydrological Services, NIHSA, at a briefing in Abuja, said some states had started experiencing varying levels of flooding and its associated disasters as early as April in 2024.

He noted that most of the flood incidents recorded so far were flash/urban floods resulting from high rainfall intensities of long duration and poor and blocked drainage systems.

Recall that the minister had in April 2024, presented the 2024 Annual Flood Outlook, AFO, by the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency, NIHSA, which showed that 148 LGAs in 31 states fall within the high flood risk, while 249 LGA fell within the moderate flood risk areas, with the remaining 377 LGAs falling within the low flood risk areas.

The Lagos State Taskforce has impounded 84 vehicles at Adeniji-Adele and adjoining routes over traffic gridlock and criminal activities caused by illegal operators of bus parks and bus stops along that axis.

In the process, at least over 84 vehicles were impounded for contravention.

The rigorous and intense operation on Friday, was led by the Chairman of the Agency, Chief Superintendent of Police, CSP, Adetayo Akerele who stated that enforcement had been become necessary following several warnings and refusals by recalcitrant operators to desist from there nefarious activities, saying, “it is time to put an end to it.”

Akerele described the activities of commercial bus drivers (danfo) as worrisome due to long hours of traffic obstruction caused by their actions which has a devastating effect on motorists and residents as a whole.

“Motorists do not have to spend longer travel time on this route due to the actions of a few.

“Occupying of one or two lanes to create illegal bus parks is completely unacceptable and we are here to let these operators know that.

Hijrah 1446: Adeleke declares Monday July 8th public holiday

Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke has declared Monday, July 8, 2024 as public holiday to commemorate the new Islamic year, Hijrah 1446.

A statement issued by the Commissioner for Home Affairs, Mr Rasheed Aderibigbe which was published on the Ministry of Information bulletin on Friday, stated that the holiday is to allow Muslims in the state celebrate the new Islamic year.

The Statement added that Governor Ademola Adeleke would preside over a special parade/March session as part of the activities to celebrate the new year.

While wishing Muslims a happy celebration, the governor charged them to use the period to pray for the unity and peaceful development of the state and Nigeria in general.

“The public holiday graciously approved by His Excellency, Senator Ademola Adeleke is to allow Muslim faithful to celebrate and pray for peace, progress and development of the state and Nigeria as a whole.

“Governor Adeleke wishes all Muslim faithful a happy celebration of the new Islamic year, Hijrah 1446 AH”, it stated.

No baby boy was swapped at Central hospital Warri — Nurse

Contrary to allegations in Warri that a baby was swapped after delivery at the Central hospital in Warri, Delta State, a nurse in the hospital has denied it.

The nurse, who spoke under condition of anonymity said she was in theater on Wednesday when the baby was delivered through Cesarean operation, CS, adding that the mother of the child confirmed that the baby was a girl.

She said she did not know where the rumour came from that a baby boy allegedly delivered at the hospital that day at about 2.27pm was swapped with another female child.

According to the nurse, she said the baby girl was the only child delivered through CS till about 5pm that Wednesday at the theater so there was no way their could have been a swap.
