The Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU) have announced a nationwide protest to demand the payment of four months' worth of unpaid salaries and resolution of other lingering issues affecting their members. The protest, scheduled to begin on July 9, 2024, at various state chapters, will culminate in a national protest in Abuja on July 18, 2024.

The unions' joint action committee expressed frustration and disappointment over the government's failure to address their concerns despite numerous meetings with the Ministers of Education and Labour. The unpaid salaries, which span four months, have caused significant hardship for the union members, and the government's inaction has left them feeling neglected and disrespected.

The protest is a last resort for the unions, who have exhausted all avenues for dialogue and negotiation. They are demanding immediate payment of the outstanding salaries and a commitment from the government to address the lingering issues affecting their members. The unions are also seeking improved working conditions, better welfare packages, and a more conducive work environment.

The nationwide protest is expected to draw attention to the plight of non-academic staff in Nigerian universities and inter-university centers. The unions are determined to fight for their rights and ensure that their members receive fair treatment and compensation for their services. The protest may disrupt academic activities in universities across the country, but the unions believe that drastic action is necessary to prompt the government to take their demands seriously.
