In a recent report by The Vanguard, Otunba Segun Sowunmi, a senior member of the Peoples Democratic Party, underscored the pivotal role played by notable Yoruba leaders such as Obasanjo and Pa Adebanjo in fostering unity and amity among various ethnic groups in Nigeria. Sowunmi also drew attention to lingering unresolved issues dating back to the Awolowo era, which have contributed to strains in the relationship between the Yorubas and the Igbos.

Emphasizing the importance of maintaining the longstanding ties between the Yorubas and the northern region, Sowunmi cautioned against any actions that could jeopardize this critical alliance. He specifically referenced the indispensable assistance rendered by the north in previous elections, particularly in support of opposition candidates Atiku and Kwankwaso.

Sowunmi argued that preserving the coalition between these groups is imperative for safeguarding the nation's stability and fostering lasting peace. He warned against disregarding the significant contributions of those who stood by the Yoruba community during crucial political junctures, stressing the need for reciprocity and mutual respect.

In his address, Sowunmi highlighted the role of figures like Obasanjo, Pa Adebanjo, and himself in advocating for fairness and reconciliation across tribal lines. He lamented the enduring tensions stemming from historical grievances, particularly between the Yorubas and the Igbos, and urged for concerted efforts towards reconciliation and healing.

In his words: "Without the efforts of guys like Obasanjo, Pa Adebanjo, and to a lesser extent myself who have demanded that fair be fair, the difficulties from the Awolowo era have not been settled with other tribes, especially the Igbos who to this day consider Yorubas in a terrible light."
