Alake asks Tinubu to declare July 13 ‘Wole Soyinka Day’

The Alake and Paramount ruler of Egba Land, Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo, has urged President Bola Tinubu to declare July 13 a national day to celebrate Prof Wole Soyinka’s contribution to humanity.

The paramount ruler also said Soyinka should be honored with the second highest national honour of Grand Commander of Order of Niger as the Nobel Laureate marks his 90th birthday.

Oba Gbadebo made this call on Tuesday, during a press conference held to herald events lined up to mark the 90th birthday of the first African Nobel Prize winner in Literature.

The royal father said as way to further honour the playwright, he is declaring July 13th ‘Wole Soyinka Day’ and this will be celebrated by all sons and daughters of Egba land both at home and in the Diaspora.

Reps to probe twin suicide bombing in Borno

The House of Representatives, on Tuesday, unveiled plans to investigate the multiple bombings which occured on Saturday, 29th June 2024 during a wedding, a funeral and a hospital in coordinated attacks in Gwoza, Borno State, Nigeria. 

The resolution was passed sequel to the adoption of a motion on ‘Matter of urgent public importance’, sponsored by Hon. Ahmad Jaha, who underscored the need to improve intelligence gathering and community engagement to avoid reoccurrence of the unfortunate incident in the future.

After the passage of the resolution, the lawmakers observed a minute silence in honour of the victims of the bomb attacks.

In his lead debate, Hon. Jaha lamented that the “heinous act of terror has resulted in the loss of not less than 30 innocent lives and caused immeasurable grief and suffering to the affected community with many battling with their lives at the various hospitals. 

Insurgency: Sack all appointees in security sector – Rep tells Tinubu

Abdulsamad Dasuki, a member of the House of Representatives, has asked President Bola Tinubu to sack all his appointees in the security sector because they have failed to meet the expectations of Nigerians.

Dasuki said this, during the debate on a motion condemning the recent suicide bombing in Borno State. The motion was sponsored by Ahmed Jaha.

In his remarks, the lawmaker said the President appointed several northerners into the security sector so that they can take care of insecurity in the North, however, they have not been able to do that.

He stated that the country needs a scapegoat, adding that the House should urge the President to sack all his political appointees in the security sector.

Angry youths shut down SEEPCO OPL oil field in Bayelsa

Some aggrieved youths of the Ijaw Youths Council, IYC, and Onuebum community, in Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, on Tuesday barricaded the site of an oil well project in OPL 2005 located in the community.

According to the youths, the owner of the project, sterling Oil Exploration and Energy Production Company Limited, (SEEPCO), allegedly disregarded the state government’s directive on resumed negotiations with host communities and compliance with local, state and federal laws including Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA).

The angry youths, numbering over a hundred, arrived the dredging site of the project at about 9:30 am and shut down operations.

They were also supported by Onuebum youths led by the Chairman and Secretary of the Onuebum Oil and Gas Task Force, Mr John Bailiff Egapekpar and Engr. Ebitimi Egbenpere, respectively.
