Senator Boni Khalwale has called for the removal of the Office of the First Lady held by Rachel Ruto deeming it unconstitutional. Speaking in the Senate on Wednesday July 3, 2024 Khalwale criticized the office saying it wastes public resources.

Khalwale emphasized that both the Office of the First Lady and the Office of the Deputy President's wife should be abolished. He noted these offices have been costing millions of shillings over the years.

Khalwale said, "It’s not just the First Lady’s office that drains millions, but also the office of the Deputy President’s wife, the Prime Cabinet Secretary’s wife and even governors’ wives’ offices."

He humorously added that if he were to become president, deputy president or governor he would face difficulty deciding who would be the First Lady, considering he has several wives.

Khalwale remarked, "If I had such ambitions, it would shake my family. If I entered one of these offices, who would be my First Lady? Which of my wives would take the title?"

For the financial year 2024/2025, the Office of the First Lady was allocated KSh 696.6 million, while the Deputy President’s wife’s office received KSh 557.5 million. Khalwale's statements highlight the debate over the necessity and constitutionality of these offices, raising concerns about public spending and resource allocation.
