Tinubu Tells Army Not To Allow Violent Groups Overrun Nigeria

According to PUNCH, President Bola Tinubu has called on the Nigerian Army to prevent violent groups from overrunning citizens, emphasizing the importance of maintaining national security. Speaking at the Maxwell Khobe Cantonment in Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State, during the closing ceremony of the week-long 2024 Nigeria Army Day celebration, the President praised the Army's sacrifices in ensuring the safety of Nigerians amid rising security challenges over the past decade and a half.

Represented by Minister of Defence Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, Tinubu reaffirmed his administration's commitment to equipping the Army to fulfill its constitutional role. He announced the approval of Group Life Assurance payments for Army personnel who die in the line of duty and the acquisition of attack helicopters and other necessary combat equipment.

"As your Commander-In-Chief, my administration is committed to building a well-equipped, and truly professional army that will remain the pride of the nation. We are committed to providing you with all that you need to enable you to fulfill your constitutional responsibilities," Tinubu stated.

The President expressed pride in the Army's capabilities, evidenced by the impressive parade and equipment display. He stressed the need for the Army to adapt to evolving security challenges in a complex and changing world, highlighting the importance of ongoing training and strategic planning.

"As the world changes, our security architecture must also change to meet up with the new threats. Here is my bottom line: Nigerians must be safe in their fields, on our highways, in our markets, and their homes. The Nigerian Army remains the backbone of the security architecture that would ensure this security," Tinubu asserted.

He urged the Army to continue working closely with other security agencies and maintain professionalism in their operations. Tinubu praised the Army as an institution with a proud history that has never failed Nigeria, urging them to uphold justice and integrity.

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, described the week-long celebration as a success and expressed gratitude to the President for his strategic guidance and confidence in the Army. He reiterated the Army's loyalty and commitment to defending the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The grand finale of the Army Day celebration was attended by dignitaries including Plateau State Governor Barrister Caleb Mutfwang, Taraba State Governor Agbus Kefas, and Chief of Defense Staff Christopher Musa. The event featured the commissioning of two military aircraft, a display of military vehicles, and the presentation of meritorious awards to military personnel and civilians. Notably, philanthropist and BUA Group Chairman Abdusamad Rabiu was recognized for his significant contributions, including a N10 billion donation to the Security Support Fund, with N2 billion allocated to the Nigerian Army.
