The Rivers State Police Command on Thursday, April 25, 2024, narrated how one of its officers was shot dead at night by some fleeing hoodlums while he was on duty.

The command disclosed this on its X handle, saying the officer, Inspector Sunday Baba, attached to the Rumuolumeni Divisional Headquarters of the command, was shot dead on Wednesday night.

According to the command, though the perpetrators of the act fled after killing the officer, the vehicle which they drove to the scene was recovered by the police operatives.

The command said it is very sad that police officers will leave home for work but will not be sure of returning home after doing the work.

The command wrote: "Yesterday night, Inspector Sunday Baba, a brave police officer serving at Rumuolumeni, Rivers State, lost his life on duty.

"Though the perpetrators fled, we recovered their vehicle. It’s sad that being a police officer means leaving home in good health, never certain of your return."

The state police command has, in recent times, grappled with the activities of hoodlums and cultists who are in the habit of targeting police officers from the command, by either killing them or inflicting life-threatening injuries on them.

The command has also responded many times by killing some of the perpetrators, including some leaders of various deadly cult groups unleashing violence in the state.
