In a blunt interview on Arise TV, the former chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo, explains that the rise of Peter Obi as a presidential candidate in the last election was largely driven by the disappointment of the Igbo community in the major political parties, the PDP and APC, for not providing opportunities for Igbo aspirants.

He highlights the solidarity of the Igbo community, which rallied behind Obi regardless of their location or party affiliation. He also suggests that younger voters and Christians who were dissatisfied with the Muslim-Muslim ticket found a natural fit in Obi, as a Christian from the South-East region. He argues that these factors combined to create the momentum behind Obi's candidature.

He said, "When the Igbos felt that they should have been given an opportunity by the major political parties to run for the presidency and they were disappointed both in PDP and APC. When Peter Obi suddenly came out from the Labour Party, they went for him wherever they were. The fact that an Igbo was on the ballot was all that made the magic for Peter Obi. Of course, there are two other factors, the youth rooted for Obi, and the Muslim-Muslim ticket did not help, so the Christians felt they had Christian on the ticket."
